Book Review 204: Kiss of the Vampire

Kiss of the Vampire (Warriors of the Rift #1)
Author: Cynthia Garner
Publisher: Forever  (February 1, 2012)
Paperback: 352 pages
Full Disclosure: Received from Publisher for review

Whats it About According to GoodReads:

Once a generation, the rift between the paranormal world and the human world opens, allowing supernatural entities to cross. Called in to investigate a string of violent murders, special agent Tobias Caine isn’t interested in rekindling his relationship with half-demon, half-human Nix de la Fuente. Yet one look and the vampire knows his need for her is as strong as ever.

What I Thought: Nix de la Fuente has it hard, not only is she a female law enforcement officer, but she is a female law enforcement officer that just so happens to be half demon. In a world where the things that go bump in the night are real, demons are looked down upon as some of the worst. Usually those that are half demon go insane by the age of 20 and give into their demon full time. Nix isn’t about to let that happen to her anytime soon. She is constantly fighting off her demon, using breathing exercises and Tai Chi to help her stay calm and keep the demon at bay. Of course that is all threatened to be upset when her ex-boyfriend and lover Tobias, a vampire, comes back into her life along with a string of gruesome murders. Is Nix going to be able to resist all of Tobias’ charms and keep the demon at bay?

Honestly, I really liked Nix at first. She is this strong character who kicks ass and takes names, but after awhile I got tired of her always trying to stay in control. I realize that her letting her demon go could have disastrous results, but sometimes I felt that it would have been in her best interest if she would have done that.

This was a book that I just could not get myself to finish. I stopped reading about half way through because I just couldn’t get myself into the story. However, I do not blame that on the author or the plot of this book. This time me not finishing a book rests solely on my shoulders. Spending as much time as I did in February bouncing in and out of the hospital, I just couldn’t devote as much time to this book as I would have liked.

Kiss of the Vampire is a book that needs more than a cursory glance. Usually by half way through a book like this I can figure out who done it, and then I just speed through the rest of the book. But I really liked that this wasn’t the case in this one. I will be picking Kiss of the Vampire back up at a later date, and will probably re-review it then.

Do I Recommend: Yes. This book I think would sit well with others who liked the Sookie Stackhouse series, or possibly even the Chicagoland Vampire series.

Note from Jess: This review was supposed to a part of  a blog tour that happened on March 1st. Because I spent most of February sick I will be posting the other review from this blog tour later today.
